Seeing Ghosts: Imagination at the End of the World
A workshop for writing differently
Sheffield University Management School
Ghost stories are a universal aspect of human experience. We tell ghost stories to touch those parts of our lives that are unseen, incomprehensible and hidden but nonetheless act upon us persistently through a process we know as haunting. The stories are a way to open up to the haunting and arrive at a deeper understanding of the world and ourselves.
Please join us in a collective writing of ghost stories at the University of Sheffield. We will:
Use the epistemic faculties of ghosts to awaken our imagination and reflect collectively and creatively on our past, present and future as academic workers and actors within a capitalist society,
Haunt and be haunted to uncover hidden fears and hopes for organisations and organising,
“Loosen” our imagination and develop our creative writing or “writing differently” skills.
The workshop dates are to be announced, but it will take place in the first week of November 2025. The workshop will run over two days. It will include writing guidance from a published Sheffield author and a ghost walk around the streets of Sheffield.
To participate, please complete the registration form Here.
Academics of all levels of experience, including doctoral students are welcome. Participation is unfortunately limited to 15 people, and we will be accepting attendants on a first-come-first-served basis.
There is no charge for participation, but attendees will need to pay for their own travel, accommodation and evening meals. Small travel/accommodation bursaries are available for doctoral students.
